Although the knotty pine cabinets were not ideal in wood species to contemplate keeping around, they were well constructed originally, in really good shape, and the knots seemed manageable to deal with from a painting perspective. Thus, a design decision was made to keep the cabinets and paint them. As requested, the large wall separating the kitchen and living areas was completely removed, a move that greatly opened up the two spaces. The existing peninsula-based design, however, continued to create a barrier between the kitchen and eat-in area. A very key design change was made in that regards to relocating and re-purposing the original peninsula cabinets into an island. This created a much better flow of traffic from the kitchen prep area to other parts of the space. Once the rest of the kitchen was dressed out with modern kitchen components, the results were spectacular....a large, unified space in the back of the house for cooking, entertaining, and enjoying additional "face time" with family.
