To keep expenses to a minimum, it was decided to leverage the existing footprint / foundation of the stoop. The roof design became somewhat of a challenge. On the surface, a gable roof style would make a lot of sense and would match the upper gable feature two stories above. However, the large Palladian window above the entry door negated the ability to achieve the same roof pitch as the upper gabled feature. It would have architecturally irresponsible, but unfortunately an otherwise common practice, to simply flatten the roof pitch and be done with it. Instead, an innovative curved roof design was proposed that not only did not fight the upper gable roof, but the radius of the proposed roof complemented, in fact matched, that of the Palladian window above. The end result was a rather unique front entry portico that created a tasteful differentiation from the nearby homes.
