An existing 9’ X 14’ galley-style kitchen presented quite a challenge for a growing amount of activity in both everyday family life and entertaining friends and colleagues. Neither the style nor the size of the current kitchen was sufficient for the homeowner’s needs. Based on family and entertaining needs, the customers wanted significantly more space, double applicances where possible, multiple cooking areas, and a large eat-in area that negated the need to use the dining room for anything other than formal occasions or holidays. The original galley kitchen was incorporated into an 18' X 20' addition by blowing out the entire rear portion of the kitchen and installing a large bearing, ceiling-level beam. The "new" portion of the kitchen contained a vaulted ceiling for contrast and openness. The kitchen became a wonderful focul point for an overall project that consisted of nearly 2000 square feet of new and remodeled space.
